How whitening works

  • A check of teeth and gums — decay and gum inflammation need treating first.
  • We protect your gums and lips so the gel only touches the teeth.
  • A hydrogen-peroxide whitening gel is applied in several cycles.
  • We compare the shade and give you advice for the first days.

The whole appointment usually takes 60 to 90 minutes.

Why whiten at the dentist, not with a drugstore kit

Under EU rules, products sold over the counter may contain no more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, so their effect is mild. Stronger products may only be used by a dentist. We also check beforehand that decay, exposed tooth necks or old fillings don't stand in the way.

What whitening won't change

Whitening lightens natural enamel — not fillings, crowns or veneers, which keep their original shade. If you have fillings on your front teeth, you may want them replaced after whitening so the colours match; we'll tell you at the check-up.

The first days after whitening

For about 48 hours avoid coffee, tea, red wine, turmeric and smoking — teeth stain more easily during this time. Temporary sensitivity to cold is common and usually fades within two days.

Questions

Frequent questions

Is teeth whitening bad for your teeth?

Done by a dentist on healthy teeth, whitening is a safe procedure. Peroxide does not dissolve enamel; it breaks down the pigments inside it. The most common side effect is temporary sensitivity.

Does whitening hurt?

The whitening itself doesn't hurt. You may feel sensitivity or brief twinges during or shortly after it; they usually pass within 24–48 hours.

How long does whitening last?

Usually one to three years, depending mainly on how much coffee, tea and wine you drink and whether you smoke. Regular dental hygiene helps the result last longer.

Can fillings or crowns be whitened?

No. Whitening only works on natural enamel. Fillings, crowns and veneers keep their shade — if they are visible, we can discuss replacing them after whitening.

Can I whiten my teeth while pregnant?

We don't recommend whitening during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We only whiten adult patients' teeth.

Do I need dental hygiene before whitening?

Yes, ideally about a week before. Teeth free of tartar and plaque whiten more evenly.
