White fillings and root canal treatment
We treat tooth decay with a white composite filling that matches your tooth. If decay has reached the nerve, the tooth can often be saved with root canal treatment (endodontics).
White (composite) fillings
Composite is a tooth-coloured filling material hardened with light. It bonds firmly to the enamel, so less of the natural tooth needs to be removed. We work under local anaesthetic, which is included in the price.
Why not amalgam any more
Since 1 January 2025, amalgam (mercury) fillings are no longer used for new fillings in the EU, with rare exceptions. An intact old amalgam filling doesn't need replacing as a precaution — we replace it if it is damaged, there is decay under it, or you don't like how it looks.
Root canal treatment (endodontics)
When decay or an injury reaches the nerve, it becomes inflamed, causing pain or swelling. In root canal treatment we remove the inflamed tissue, then clean, disinfect and fill the canals. It usually takes one to three visits and ends with a check X-ray. A tooth treated this way is best protected with a crown afterwards.
After treatment
- Eat once the anaesthetic has worn off, so you don't bite your lip or cheek.
- Sensitivity to cold for a few days after a new filling is normal.
- If biting still hurts after a week, let us know — we'll adjust the filling.

Frequent questions
When can I eat after a white filling?
Composite is fully hardened by light during the appointment, so you can eat as soon as the anaesthetic wears off. Until then you might bite your numb cheek or tongue.
How long does a white filling last?
With good care, usually 5 to 10 years or more. The main threat is new decay at the edge of the filling, so regular check-ups and dental hygiene matter.
Does treating a cavity hurt?
No. We do fillings and root canals under local anaesthetic. Once it wears off, the tooth may be sensitive for a few days.
What should I do if a filling falls out?
Call us as soon as you can. Until your appointment, brush gently and avoid hard or sticky food on that side. If it hurts, see our urgent care page.
How do I know I have a cavity?
Early decay often doesn't hurt. Warning signs are sensitivity to sweet or cold, dark spots or pits on a tooth, and food catching between teeth. A check-up with an X-ray is the most reliable way to find it.
Is a root canal painful?
The treatment itself is done under anaesthetic and usually doesn't hurt. For a few days afterwards the tooth may be tender when you bite — that's normal and an ordinary painkiller helps.
